An ongoing summary of the fourth season of The Enemy Within: Remixed. This will be expanded as further Acts are finished.

Prologue: Where We Left Off

At the end of Power Behind the Throne, the adventurers had uncovered the conspiracies of the Hand in Middenheim and foiled the attempted coup d’etat by the Magister Magistri. While Kurfurst Boris Todbringer and his remaining advisors were grateful, there was also some embarrassment regarding the amount of dirt the adventurers had found on various important people in Middenheim. They were offered – and accepted – employment as problem-solvers extraordinaire for House Todbringer, and instructed to set off for Wolfenburg in Ostland to report to Baron Heinrich Hohenfels, the Kurfurst’s bastard son, diplomat and unofficial spymaster, who would surely find important work for them.

Grapes of Wrath

ce159b8dfb6bf65ab612e7d432b9de18The party left Middenheim to begin the long journey east to Wolfenburg, with a couple of errands on the way: most importantly, to check on the famous wine-growing village of Pritzstock and investigate rumours of some strange events that might put the wine harvest at risk. The village turned out to be plagued by flocks of strangely aggressive crows, a few of whom were apparently undead!

With some help from locals, the adventurers managed to trace the haunting to its source, a mad sorcerer hiding out in the woods. Making a temporary and uncomfortable alliance with a warband of the Seeing Circle, they captured the sorcerer and eventually learned he was on a mission of vengeance for the murder of his brother.

The forbidding Schloss von Reuter

Continuing east through Hochland, the adventurers came across a dying man and agreed to bring the news of his death to his father, the lord of the nearby Schloss von Reuter. They were welcomed by the lord, Konstantin von Reuter, and his family, but their hospitality turned out to be a trap: Konstantin was a necromancer who intended to use them for his horrific experiments. With the help of his abused yet kindly daughter Anya, the adventurers managed to escape the dark Schloss, kill Konstantin and end his evil works.

Slaughter in Spittelfeld

After a detour to Bergsburg, the party continued their journey east through Hochland and Ostland and eventually reached Wolfenburg without further major incident. There they met their patron, Baron Heinrich Hohenfels, who wasted little time in sending them on their first mission: to locate another contact of his, the physician Alessandra Giuliani, who had gone missing in the city.

The adventurers traced her to the plague-stricken tenements of the Spittelfeld slums, and eventually discovered the mysterious “plague” wasn’t an actual disease at all, but blood poisoning spread by a crazed vampire-thing. After an unpleasant expedition into the cellars they managed to destroy the vampire and stop the “plague” spreading further.

Curd Your Enthusiasm

Pleased with their handling of their first mission, Heinrich – somewhat distracted by his diplomatic worries, as Ostland and Talabeckland were edging closer to outright war – gave them some time off while waiting for some information he needed before sending them on their next.

In the meantime, they took on a freelance investigation for a friend of friends: a case of poisoned cheese sold by the otherwise well-regarded cheesemonger Harzert. This investigation led the adventurers to their first encounter with the Skaven – the subterranean rat-people – one of whom had been manipulating the cheesemonger by impersonating the ghost of his dead wife. Apparently the cheeseshop and its customers were unwittingly being turned into a laboratory for field-testing new poisons.

Eventually the adventurers were summoned to meet Heinrich again, this time to receive a much longer-ranging mission: to track down and eliminate the fugitive Gotthard Kepler, alias Gotthard von Wittgenstein, who had fled Middenheim and apparently gone to Bretonnia…
